Orman Fakültesi’nde Prof. Dr. Besalet Pamay’dan peyzaj dersleri alan ilk 5 öğrenciden biridir. 1975’te aynı üniversitede doktora eğitimini tamamlayarak 1980 yılında doçent oldu. Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi’nde 1988’de profesör oldu.

Bu üniversitede Orman Mühendisliği ve Peyzaj Mimarlığı bölümlerinde dersler verdi. 1992’de Zonguldak Karaelmas Üniversitesi Orman Fakültesi dekanlığına atanarak iki dönem dekanlık yaptı ve bu fakültede Orman Mühendisliği ve Peyzaj Mimarlığı bölümlerini kurdu. 1997’de Yeditepe Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi’ne profesör olarak atandı ve Peyzaj Mimarlığı bölümünü kurdu. 2002 yılında Peyzaj Mimarlığı bölümünün de içinde olduğu Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi’nin dekanı olarak atandı ve üç yıl dekanlık yaptı. 25 yıl çalıştığı Yeditepe Üniversitesi’nde Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü Müdür Yardımcılığı, yaklaşık on yıl üniversite yönetim kurulu ve senato üyesi olarak görev yaptı.

Peyzaj Mimarlığı bölümünün Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi’nden Mimarlık Fakültesi‘ne geçmesi nedeniyle bu fakültede Kentsel Tasarım ve Peyzaj Mimarlığı bölümünün kuruluşunu yaptı. Yeditepe Üniversitesi Arboretumu’nu kurdu ve 20 yıl bu arboretumu yönetti. Çeşitli üniversitelerde 53 yıl çalıştıktan sonra Yeditepe Üniversitesi’nden emekli oldu.Bu çalışma süresi içinde İngiltere Oxford Üniversitesi’nde bir yıl ders verdi. Almanya, Fransa, Rusya, Azerbaycan ve Norveç gibi ülkelerin üniversitelerinde ortak projelerde görev yaptıç 150’yi aşkın yayını ve yedi adet kitabı bulunmaktadır.

In this book conifers and their allies and Palms will be studied. Broadleaves will be studied in the book’s Volume II. Landscape architects have to know about trees and shrubs, but the students of landscape architecture are not going to be botanists. They do not need to know details of microscopic characteristics that are not visible to the naked eye. For that reason, general botanical features of plants for identification will be explained and growing conditions and ecological characteristics of woody plants and palms will be studied in this book. According to the botanical definition, Palms are not trees but they are as tall as trees, and in fact they are large herbs. Some palm species are very important and striking tall plants, so palms are also included and studied in this book. A landscape architect should know about one thousand tree and shrub species and their forms, varieties and cultivars. More than one thousand woody plant species have been used for landscape planning in Turkey for years and the new species which are native to Turkey or exotic species are being added to this big amount of number of trees and shrubs. It is impossible for a landscape archi­tect for the best designing and planning of a landscape area without having the identification knowledge of plants, and the growing characteristics of plants. He has been in many academic and managerial positions in Yeditepe University with over 22 years of experience. Between 1976 and 2000, he has been part of many academic projects and worked abroad for some time, in countries such as United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, France, Russia, Azerbaijan and Portugal. In 1987, he attended lectures in Oxford University as Visiting Professor. Prof. Dr. Ata has seven published textbooks, many articles and reports.
